H's Prayer This Morning

It was H's turn to say the prayer this morning before school. We've been working with the kids on thinking about things we are grateful for and things we need help with. H has been asking for a while now that K and M's owies get better. This morning she added one more person's owies to the list...MINE!

After her prayer she explained that it was the owies on my face (the one on my forehead in particular) that prompted her prayer.

New Stuff Around the House

Our new ceiling fan:

New candlesticks that I made from a couple of table legs and the bottoms of some terra cotta pots (Yes, I know the pumpkins are a little small. They are place holders until I can get to the store to get bigger ones. Also, I'm going to make a third one that is a little smaller.):

And, while the boy in the picture is not new, the thing he is doing is:

Reading Under the Stars

This picture cracks me up. When I took it, it was pitch black so I wasn't really sure what I was going to get. Their faces are so funny to me.

I'm not sure why H is so sad.

Last night H's school held Literacy Night. It was called Reading Under the Stars. We got dressed in our pj's; packed up our pillows, blankets, snacks and books; and headed to the school to get a spot to have a little reading session. When we got to the school H asked me where the flashlight was. Yep, I forgot it. Luckily, a family from our ward was there and they had one we could borrow.

We didn't get much reading done, but it did get me and the kids out of the house for an hour. Thankfully, the weather was nice.

Now That's Love

Tonight I made K some toast for dinner. He doesn't like his toast cut at all. I guess I wasn't paying too close attention because I cut his toast into squares. He asked me where his was and I told him I was sorry and that I had cut his toast. He looked at it, paused for a second or two and said, "Just the way I wanted it! Thanks, Mom."

H's First Grade Pictures

A marked improvement, don't you think? (see HERE if you aren't sure what I'm talking about)

It's funny, I didn't remember how...interesting (?) her kinder pics were until just now. I love in this picture how you can see the freckles on her nose and only one side of her face.

How's That Go?

Today H was making "wet floor" signs for her store. She asked how to spell floor and N said, "Sound it out." Then K piped up and said, "I know. A-R-S-E!"

The Rule of Threes

I firmly believe that things (usually accidents) happen in threes. It happened in my family growing up all the time. I mean, one day one of my sisters got a cast taken off her arm, another sister got one put on and that night my youngest sisters were born. It was quite a day.

So far we've had this:

And now we can add this:

I think we are going to be very careful for the next little while. Or, maybe we should be reckless and just get number three out of the way.

K's story:

He was climbing on a little table that we have upstairs and he fell off and hit his head on the window sill. It is pretty deep, but I didn't want to go to the ER again so they could glue him shut. I decided to play doctor and I put some liquid bandage and a butterfly on it. Hopefully, it will work and I won't regret my decision.

By the way, does having 5 out of 6 people in my family be sick count as my third thing?

More From K

Lately we've been focusing on making our prayers a little more meaningful (ie. more than just "please bless the food").

This morning K was saying the breakfast prayer and he blessed himself and H that they would feel better, M that his owie would get better and then he paused. I peeked to see what was going on.

K: Does Dad have a headache?

Me: No.

K: Do you have a headache?

Me: No.

K: Then who has a headache?

Me: No one.

K: Oh.

Then closed his eyes and bowed his head and ended his prayer.

Also this morning. I asked K if he could get M's shoe out from underneath the oven. He told me that the drawer needed to come out so he could get it. N took the drawer out and K was thrilled to discover 5 of his cars under there. He took them all and then informed he that one of them was the "King of the Cool Cars". He was playing with the cool cars and then he said, "Hey. Where's my other car?" I asked which one and he said, "You know. The boring one."

Apparently, this other car didn't make the grade.

Yesterday afternoon I started to wonder if K was getting sick. By the time N got home from work K was pretty hot. N took K's temperature and it was 101. K heard that and exclaimed, "Oh no! I'm going to be dead!"

Just How Much is a Vacation Worth?

A conversation at our house this afternoon.

Backstory: N gets slightly overwhelmed with the kids after being home with them for...an hour. So, you can imagine what it is like for him after being home a whole day.

N: Woo-hoo! I get to go to work tomorrow.

Me: Yeah, and it is only for 4 days!

N: I'm thinking I'm gonna cancel my time off.

Me: You do and you'll pay the price.

N: What's the price?

Me: YOU'LL PAY THE PRICE!

K: Yeah, Dad. The Fisher-Price.

Emergency...shmergency!

First a little story.

The other day I got R dressed in this shirt (the one she is wearing in the picture). After I got it on her, K says, "She looks like a tablecloth!" Maybe I should rethink her Halloween costume.

Okay, now on to the real reason for this post.

It was just your average Saturday afternoon and N had just left for the Priesthood session. I started to make some salsa and the kids were all playing (except for R who was taking a nap). Then there was a crash of some sort. I vaguely remember hearing K's big Tonka dump truck in the crash. M was crying and I noticed this gash on his jaw. I wiped it off and saw that it was kind-of deep and about an inch long.

I called my mom to see if she could come stay with the other kids so I could take M to the ER. No answer. Then I thought, "Why am I calling my mom when Kelli is like 2 minutes away?" Kelli said she'd be right over.

Then, I wondered where the closest hospital was. I called 3 sisters in my ward and one friend and none of them were home. When Kelli got there, we decided which hospital was closest and M and I were off. Oh wait, right at this time R woke up and was screaming because she was hungry. Luckily, Kelli fed her.

We get to the ER at 6:30 and we wait. And wait. And wait. At 7:00 they call us back and get all of M's info. They take us to an ER room and we wait some more. The doctor came in and looked at M and decided he could do Dermabond because it was a nice clean cut. So, we wait some more and they finally get him all glued. M got an otter pop because he did so well (he literally did not move while they were gluing him). We finally got checked out and were on our way home when I noticed that M had pulled the dermabond off. We were about 3 minutes away from the hospital so I turned around and went back. They took us back pretty quickly and I got kind of chewed out by the doctor:

Dr: What happened, Mom?

Me: He pulled the glue off.

Dr: I told you he has to leave it alone.

Me: Well, I was driving. There wasn't much I could do.

Dr: Didn't he have his band-aid on?

Me: Umm, yeah that was off before we even got to the car.

Dr: Then put another one on.

Me (thinking): M-kay, because I just happen to carry huge band-aids around with me wherever I go.

He glued him back up and then the nurse put another band-aid on followed by some type of glue and some cloth tape. M held perfectly still, but no otter pop this time. We made it home with only a little bit of the cloth coming off.

Hopefully he will leave it alone long enough for it to heal.

Oh, yeah. N wanted me to make sure everyone knew that that is pizza sauce on M's face and not blood.
